Before embarking on a new project it’s worth assessing how we fit the project and how it fits us. How prepared we are to solve the problem and make a change happen. Some good questions include:
- Will the type of work we’ll be doing energize us or drain us?
- Will the activities put us in a good flow state?
- What skills do we already have and what skills do we need to learn or become better at?
- What’s our unique set of skills that combined make us the right person for the job?
- Do we have good relationships that will help us be more effective and impactful quicker? Or do we need to build them?
- How steep is the learning curve? Can we create impact soon or do we need to be patient while we learn the skills and build the relationships we need?
- What does the system look like? What skills are missing that we can provide? What are the gaps that we can fill?
- Will we enjoy our days? Will we love our customers and the people we serve?
- Will we have the type of competition that will help us thrive and become a better version of ourselves?
- What’s the size of the project? Is it small enough for us to overwhelm the space with great service? And big enough to make a significant contribution?
Better to have a good understanding of what we’re about to embark on than to go back every time and start something new that we actually never started.
