We’re trying to make a change happen with our voice, message, products, or services. But is that change contagious?
Do we need to be constantly pushing, or can we design and communicate it in a way that it spreads on its own?
When designing it, it’s important to consider how it will create its own momentum and how it will be shared and spread beyond those who initially experience it.
Some qualities to think about include visibility – so people can see its effects- and meaning – because it creates real value. Accessibility – others can join easily, and adaptability – it works in different contexts.
But most importantly, contagious change makes people look and feel good, gives them a sense of belonging, and matches them with the status they seek. It also gives them stories worth telling because it becomes part of their identity.
So maybe a better question isn’t whether our change will work but whether it’ll work in a way that makes others want to spread it.
