They Owe Us Nothing

Feeling like our audience owes us something because we’re doing important work only intoxicates our minds and holds us back.

As creators and changemakers, we must act like we owe our audience everything while expecting nothing in return. This isn’t unfair – it’s liberating. It’s not always easy but it’s simple.

When we release ourselves from the expectation of reciprocity, we’re free to focus entirely on creating value and helping others. We’re free to serve without resentment and give without tracking likes or comments.

Our audience doesn’t owe us their attention, trust, or change. But we owe them our best work, consistently, our genuine care, and our constant effort to serve them better.

Meaningful change happens when we focus on what we can give, not what we think we deserve.
